My first conversations about the project were with Sydney Pollack – defining a neo-realist style, visualizing the settings to edit seamlessly between our footage and TV coverage, characterizing the different factions in an instinctive way – envisioning the events of the 2000 Presidential Election to be represented at the pace of a thriller. The reality of the project: 100+ locations representing 14 cities and building the Supreme Court on stage. The most intriguing circumstance: because the events are still fiercely disputed by so many, virtually all the paperwork – court cases, memos and charts – could be found online (with some serious digging, of course) and this became my personal mission – the contents of every folder and piece of paper with the correct information. The actors commented on what a difference it made for them.
